The high rate of human trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara province is due to inadequate systems for recruitment, placement and protection of migrant workers, a legislator said yesterday. Irgan Chairul Mahfiz said that last year 15,000 workers from the province were recruited illegally to work overseas, ranking it third after West Java and West Nusa Tenggara provinces. “This is the homework that local government must finish,” Mahfiz said yesterday in Kupang. He said local authorities must provide would-be migrant workers with adequate knowledge of the recruitment system and the skills needed for their jobs. Deputy governor Esthon Foenay acknowledged that lack of such knowledge and skills contributed to the high rate of trafficking. He said illegal migrant workers are mostly child workers from villagers, largely from poor families, who had not finished their education but wanted to get jobs immediately. To prevent any further increase, Foenay said, local police and military should take firm action against human traffickers. He also asked religious leaders and young people to help deal with the issue.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
