The Civil Alliance Against National Education formally ended its protest yesterday against the introduction of a course in schools which they claimed was “nationalistic’ and “brainwashing.”

The government has agreed to shelve its plan to add the Moral and National Education module to the school curriculum, although it has yet to withdraw it entirely.

“We regard this as an end to this phase of the struggle,” said alliance spokesman Yip Po-lam at a final protest rally, “though we will continue to monitor to prevent the subject from penetrating into the curriculum in different forms.”

More than 6,000 people joined yesterday’s event in front of the government headquarters. An estimated 400,000 people joined the protest at its peak between late August and early September.
