Police on Thursday reported almost 50 violations of a nationwide gun ban imposed ahead of mid-term elections in May.

At least 46 gun violations have been recorded since the campaign season started on Monday, police said.

Violators included 43 civilians and three government employees.

Meanwhile, civil groups in the city of Laoag in Ilocos Norte province today held a march calling for a peaceful campaign season.

Students, teachers, civic organizations, religious groups and law enforcers walked to the city square and lit candles to symbolize their vow to be vigilant during the elections. The rally ended with the signing of a peace covenant.

"We need not only more prayers, but more work to convince politicians to work for peace," said Fr Philip Anthony Dimagiba, chaplain of the provincial police force.
