Faith-based and environmental groups in the Philippines called for justice on Aug. 9 for slain anti-coal activist Gloria Capitan, 40 days after her killing.
Gunmen shot 57-year-old Capitan dead in Bataan province on July 1.
She was the leader of a group of residents in her village who are opposed to a coal storage plant project near their community.
"The aim of the killers was not just Capitan but the anti-coal movement," said Walden Bello, head of the group Focus on Global South and a former member of the House of Representatives.
"We reiterate our call to the government to use the resolution of the case as an example against those who ruin the environment and those who ruin the environmental movement," added Bello.
Church and human rights groups have circulated a petition calling for a speedy resolution of the case.
