The International Labour Organization (ILO) held a reception in Makati City on December 12 to reward journalists for writing about the situation of indigenous people throughout the country. “The indigenous peoples are ‘partners in development’ and the journalists presented them in unique storytelling that provided insightful glimpses of their culture, aspirations and indispensible efforts toward making a difference in their communities and showing the society their critical importance in nation-building,” the ILO said. Four reports won awards. “It was a good mix of stories that show the other side of our [indigenous] brothers and sisters,” said Joseph Alwyn Alburo, vice-chairman of the National Union of Journalists and a member of the judging panel.
