Fu Jen starts building new hospital
With 16 storeys above ground and four more underground, the arc-shaped hospital with 1,000 beds is expected to open in 2015. The construction cost is estimated at NT$4 billion (US$132 million).
At the ceremony, Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, prefect of Pontifical Congregation for Catholic Education, said he hoped the hospital could serve patients with the love of Christ.
Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-hsi, the host, prayed for smooth process of the project, which when completed will be the first Catholic university hospital in the world in Chinese communities.
He called on more than 200 staff, students and alumni of Fu Jen, heads of other medical institutes and government officials present to help fund the project so that its mission to spread love through medical care could be realised.
