Filipino bishops will discuss and approve the new English translation of the Roman Missal during a three-day meeting that started yesterday. “We are holding this seminar specially to discuss the new English translation. We are about to vote on it as body,” said Archbishop Romulo Valles of Zamboanga, coordinator of the project. He said once the Filipino bishops approved the translation, they will send it to the Vatican for approval. “If the Vatican approves, we will use it,” Archbishop Valles told ucanews.com. Several bishops have voiced concerns over the new missal, especially the use of English and Vatican “norms” that they claim are not necessarily applicable to the Philippines. “Rome is trying to set a general norm that is not applicable to us,” one bishop said during the meeting. Archbishop Valles, however, said the new missal will not affect Church prayers and services. “A large amount of the text will still be the same. The changes are not total,” he said. The prelate said the new text will be adapted to suit the Philippine situation and will also be translated into local languages. “This is just the first project,” Archbishop Valles said. He said the new English translation is necessary with the introduction of new Latin texts in the Roman Missal. Earlier reports said Catholics will have to adapt to new changes in Mass prayers and responses under the new English translation. For instance, whenever a priest says “The Lord be with you,” the faithful are to respond, “And with your spirit.” The current response is “And also with you.” And in the first form of the penitential rite, the faithful will confess that “I have sinned greatly ... through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.” With the current version, it is just “I have sinned through my own fault.” Related reports The liturgical renewal I would like to seeArchbishop denies restricting traditional Latin MassBishop against ’secular’ veneration of saints PM13034.1638

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
