EU funds Caritas education project

Europe partners with local unit to bring literacy to thousands of poor children

The European Union has signed a deal with Caritas Bangladesh to help provide basic education for children of poor families nationwide.

A partnership worth 9.9 million euros (US$13.2m) will run for six years to aid mostly impoverished, drop-out and tribal children in six of Caritas' eight regions.

The deal was signed on November 27 by Caritas' executive director Benedict Alo D’Rozario and the head of the EU delegation to Bangladesh, William Hanna.

The project will benefit more than 150,000 children in more than a thousand educational establishments.

Dr D’Rozario said Caritas will not construct buildings for the project but instead run operations in rented institutions. It will also plans to provide nutritious food to students and train their parents in life-skill development.

He said the project also aims to improve literacy among the underprivileged.
