Church authorities plan to rein in tourists at the Old Goa complex to maintain sanctity, taking a cue from temples barring inappropriately dressed visitors. Father Savio Barreto, rector of the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa, said that tourists, particularly local ones, have photographed each other in inappropriate poses, often inside the church, disturbing its sanctity. However, he said, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) contends that the complex falls under its jurisdiction and the Church could not impose a ban on photography. There have been local devotees who have been “scandalized” by the behavior, the priest said. “We have already given an order for installation of signage relating to photography, behavior and the dress code expected within the church.” Over a thousand visitors flock to the Old Goa complex daily. Church authorities have been asking for additional security to enforce discipline in the church. Father Barreto said that he would see to the installation of the signs within a month or so, notwithstanding the reluctance of the ASI authorities. Entry of foreigners to some state temples have been banned by the temple authorities upset over skimpy and beachwear outfits and dumping used garlands on the deity. Foreigners were also found kissing within the temple. Following the installation of the signs, some temples have been offering shawls to foreigners to cover themselves while in the temple.
