Church authorities plan to rein in tourists at the Old Goa complex to maintain sanctity, taking a cue from temples barring inappropriately dressed visitors. Father Savio Barreto, rector of the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa, said that tourists, particularly local ones, have photographed each other in inappropriate poses, often inside the church, disturbing its sanctity. However, he said, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) contends that the complex falls under its jurisdiction and the Church could not impose a ban on photography. There have been local devotees who have been “scandalized” by the behavior, the priest said. “We have already given an order for installation of signage relating to photography, behavior and the dress code expected within the church.” Over a thousand visitors flock to the Old Goa complex daily. Church authorities have been asking for additional security to enforce discipline in the church. Father Barreto said that he would see to the installation of the signs within a month or so, notwithstanding the reluctance of the ASI authorities. Entry of foreigners to some state temples have been banned by the temple authorities upset over skimpy and beachwear outfits and dumping used garlands on the deity. Foreigners were also found kissing within the temple. Following the installation of the signs, some temples have been offering shawls to foreigners to cover themselves while in the temple. Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
