With the onset of the rainy season in the Philippines, the social action arm of the Archdiocese of Manila appealed for donations for areas that will be affected by natural disasters.

Father Anton Pascual, executive director of Caritas Manila, said a lack of sufficient funds hinders the organization from helping victims of calamities.

"Charity must be a way of life," said the priest, adding that Catholics should not wait for a calamity to strike before making a donation.

"It is in the acts of kindness and charity that we experience true happiness and not in accumulation of wealth and achievements," said Father Pascual.

This year, the church agency aims to generate enough donations for emergency response equipment, food, water, and personal hygiene items.

Caritas Manila is currently preparing to send relief goods to families affected by the conflict in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao.

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
