Caritas Bangladesh rushes in warm clothing
Bitter cold spell strikes rural poor communities
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the temperature on Jan. 12 plunged below 5 degrees Celsius in many regions, particularly the north. The severe cold wave is expected to ease today.
Local media report that chilly winds accompanied by dense fog battered the country claiming six lives as well as disrupting communications and transport.
Hundreds of people, especially children and the old, have fallen ill from cold-related diseases including bronchial asthma, pneumonia, cough and diarrhea.
Caritas Rajshahi distributed blankets to local tribal people.
“We can’t sleep well at night because we have no quilts or blankets. I am grateful for Caritas’ help,” said Pahan Son Pahan.
Romolia Topno, a tribal Munda housewife added that without the blankets from Caritas she had to stoke the fire throughout the night.
Caritas Rajshahi regional director Denis Baskey told ucanews.com that his agencies were distributing blankets in Dinajpur and Sylhet regions as well as locally.
“We give priority to the extreme poorly, including widows and disabled people,” he explained.
Catholic parishes across Bangladesh also assisted in the distribution of warm clothes and blankets.
