Broadcaster gunned down in Mindanao

Gunmen shot and killed a broadcast journalist on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Thursday evening.

Nanding Solijon, a broadcaster working for DxLS Love Radio in Iligan City, was the second journalist murdered in Mindanao this month.

On August 1, gunmen also shot and killed photojournalist Mario Sy in General Santos City.

Solijon was shot dead by two assailants on a motorcycle at about 10:30pm on Thursday the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines reported.

He was shot seven times, primarily in the head and chest, said Ronnie Enderes, a journalist in Iligan City.

Solijon, who anchored a daily morning program, was crossing the street to his car when the assailants attacked. He was known be a vocal critic of the illegal drug trade in the city.

The broadcaster became the 19th journalist to be killed in the Philippines in the past three years.
