State authorities in Madhya Pradesh have said they will finally resume issuing health cards to survivors of the Bhopal gas leak, a key point of dispute between victims and the government.

Baulal Gaur, the state minister for Bhopal gas tragedy relief and rehabilitation, said on Thursday that authorities would conduct door-to-door surveys before issuing health cards to the remaining survivors within four months.

The government had prepared health cards for 50,000 survivors of the 1984 gas leak but stopped in 1991 after it found the cards confirmed the identities and status of those seeking compensation, according to activists.

It is estimated that more than half a million people were affected by the tragedy, many of whom have since died.
