Bishop Blasius Pujaraharja of Ketapang has warned young Catholics to be on their guard from threats posed by the modern world. “Enjoying a modern lifestyle is your choice. But you must think about the future and the past,” the West Kalimantan prelate told about 300 young people from across the diocese at a July 7-12 gathering in St. Gemma Galgani Cathedral Church’s retreat house in Ketapang. “Also, you must be sensitive to local cultures and the environment. Be careful of the modern world’s threats,” he asserted. He later called on them to get involved in various activities organized by both the Church and social groups. “Young people are challenged to give their best to the Church and society,” he told them. The six-day gathering, called “Catholic young people: Decide the direction and put Christ’s love in your life” included seminars on the environment, health and spiritual life, as well as traditional art performances and games. Some of the health issues included the dangers posed by smoking and drug abuse. Christine Ellen Sintari, one of the organizers, said the event was intended to remind young people of their roles in the Church and society. “One important thing is that young people should be encouraged to care for the environment and to be responsible for their own futures,” she said.
