An archdiocese in central Vietnam on the weekend launched a two-year theological course for lay people to train as missioners.
Seventy lay people and Religious attended the inaugural course, launched by the Committee for the Laity of the Archdiocese of Hue, on September 25 at the Pastoral Center.
Auxiliary Bishop Francis Xavier Le Van Hong attended the opening of the training course.
Father Joachim Le Thanh Hoang, head of the committee, said the program would offer students a rudimentary training in the faith.
“The course aims to provide basic theological knowledge for local Catholics so that they can do missionary work among local followers of other faiths and atheists.”
Father Hoang said he hoped that after the course the students would work with local priest in service to the Church, adding that in the past the Church faced challenges because of a lack of basic knowledge of Catholicism among lay people.
Attendees of the training included health-care workers, teachers, members of secular institutions, lay leaders and heads of Catholic associations.
The course, which will run through 2013, will cover subjects including the history of the Church, Bible study, liturgy, morality, social teachings and evangelization.
Courses will be taught by local priests and professors from the Sulpician Major Seminary on Saturdays.
Marie Nguyen Thi Nga, who is registered for the training, said she hopes the course will give her enough Church knowledge so that she can have dialogues with followers of Buddhism and Cao Dai in her neighborhood.
Hue archdiocese has 100 priests and 1,066 Religious serving 68,265 Catholics that represent seven percent of the total population in the two provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue.
