An archbishop today challenged one of the principal authors of a much-debated reproductive health (RH) bill in Congress to a “grand debate” on the issue.

Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa in Batangas province said Edcel Lagman can contact the office of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) if he accepts the challenge.

Yesterday, Lagman said he wants to have an “enlightening session” with representatives from the Catholic Church after Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle expressed willingness to resume discussions.

Archbishop Arguelles said there is nothing wrong with debate but the Church will have to do it by proxy. “Bishops or priests cannot face Lagman directly so somebody else will have to stand in for them,” he said.
