The head of the Commission for Justice and Peace and the Pastoral Migrants and Itinerant People of the diocese of Atambua, on Timor Leste, has reminded people that extramarital affairs and divorces among local Catholic couples jointly rate third in legal cases in the diocese. According to the commission’s data, between 40 and 50 such cases are dealt with every year. Many of them cases involve young Catholic couples, who have been married for as long as 10 years. The main cause is boredom. “These cases emerged because local Catholics do not understand well the spirituality of marriage,” Father Paulus Nahak Tetik said in his homily during a November 11 Holy Mass held in the compound of Marian Shrine of Ularo in Atapupu.
