Rights activists and Christians joined with victims’ families yesterday to urge the government to investigate 'disappearances' during the civil war. Marking the UN's International Day of the Disappeared, they demanded that authorities release suspected Tamil inmates long held in custody without being charged at unknown destinations throughout the island. Media reports say there are more than 5,000 political prisoners in custody. The United Nations has called for an independent investigation of alleged war crimes by government forces and the LTTE committed at the last stages of the war.
