“We Are Servants And Deserve No Credit”

This passage comes from a collection of Jesus’s sayings. It is addressed to his disciples, and to the Church as well, especially to those who have responsibilities in the Church.

As an apostle and leader in the Church, one can never stop and say, I’ve worked enough; it’s time to take my ease. Work for the Lord must be unceasing.

The comparison used is that of a master and his servants in a household. The servant has no timings, no relaxation while on duty. He may have come home having worked a full day in the fields, but while indoors, he has to prepare the master’s supper and see to his comfort. He can expect scant thanks for this. It’s just part of his job.

Although modern standards of labour are far removed from those in the ancient world, still this parable may serve as a timely warning to those in the church. All too easily workers for the Lord – priests, religious and bishops – come to a sense of entitlement, and believe that lay people owe them for what they are. They take it easy, lording it over those they are expected to serve. They become harsh and self-righteous towards others, and slack in their duties to the church. They too easily forget that vocation is not a privilege but a responsibility, not a call to prestige but to service.

May the Lord inspire us to work steadily and unceasingly in his Kingdom, and for his people.
