“Signs of the Times”

These sayings give us another glimpse into the way Jesus felt about his mission.

Jesus challenges his hearers to understand what is happening around them, even as they understand quite well the changes of season. Every farmer and peasant knows to read the sky and predict whether it will rain or not, whether it will be a warm day or not.

But we are more reluctant to interpret the “signs of the times”. Even more, we can’t be bothered.

What are these signs of the times? They are the ways in which God acts in history, that is, in the actions and reactions of human society. It is not by chance that such changes take place, but through the work of Providence.

Einstein liked to say, “God doesn’t play dice with the universe.” Similarly, the believer sees the quiet hand of God in what has been called “the theatre of public events”. It takes the eyes of faith ‘to see through’ what the unbeliever only ‘looks at.’

The various movements in contemporary history – religious fundamentalism, terrorism, mass migration of peoples, economic recession, climate change – must make us reflect on what God is telling us ‘here and now’.

We are clever enough in our own self-interest. Why not apply the same attitude to how we treat each other, and show greater forgiveness and generosity to them?
