INTRODUCTION
MODULE IN BRIEF

The UCAN Institute Reporting Program is an Internet website being designed to help our reporters improve their work. The course will be split into two:

(1) BASIC PROGRAM, a workshop designed for those fairly new to reporting or for those who want to brush up their skills and

(2) ADVANCED PROGRAM, person-to-person training, where the Institute will directly tutor you.

WHERE TO START? We would suggest all reporters run through the Basic Program, even if you have years of experience. Even old hands could benefit from some of the material. The Basic Program is in effect like reading a textbook online, but more interactive. You are in control of what you read and at what speed. Go through that first. Feel free to contact us directly when you feel you have a thorough grasp of the Basic Program. We could then aim to tutor you directly - person-to-person - using the Advanced Program.

USING THE COURSE Ideally, it would be best for reporters to work through the Reporting Program online, connected to the Internet, as it is easy to use your computer mouse to click on the examples. However, for those who find connecting to the Internet difficult, it might be wise to print out the particular "module" and work through it off-line. For those who have problems using the program online, we eventually plan to make the course available on compact disk.

REPORTING FOR UCAN
UCAN, the Union of Catholic Asian News, provides a valuable service to the Catholic Church in Asia, and worldwide. Through its website , you as a reporter help to provide Catholics and other interested parties with up-to-date information on the Church and subjects of interest to the Church in Asia. UCAN is unique in this regard. UCAN stories are not only available to a wide audience through the website. They also get published in many Church publications and websites in Asia and around the world. Plus stories are also published in our own weekly magazine, Asia Focus. UCAN is the Church's window on Asia.

MODULES Organized into reporting "modules," the course runs through the process of reporting and writing news Reports and Feature stories for UCA News. Each "module" tackles a particular subject involved in reporting. For example, "Interviewing" covers how to approach the skill of interviewing and talking to people to obtain quotes and information for a story. It includes key tips and examples to get the most out of interviews.
