In the late 1980s the Bhutanese government changed its citizenship laws so that more than 100,000 residents of Nepalese descent were considered illegal. This sparked one of the largest pogroms of the latter 20th century as one-sixth of Bhutan’s population was forced out in the early 1990s. The refugees set up camps in Nepal, which over the years became a home of sorts, with functioning schools and livelihoods projects. (Pictures by Francis Wade)
