Indian village life during drought

The people of Dhakota village in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh have endured drought for ten years.

Where wheat once grew there are now only barren dusty fields and emaciated cattle wander in search of something to eat.

Currently only two of the village's six water wells provide water.

In a bid to escape the resulting poverty and hunger, many of the village's young have left to find work in urban areas.

Across India, an average of 16,000 farmers per year a commit suicide purportedly to escape debt incurred by continued farm failure, according to official data.
