India-Bangladesh border enclaves

Since the British partition of India in 1947, the residents of 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh and 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in India have existed precariously between two worlds but belonged to neither. Many have lived and died as stateless men and women in these in-between worlds.

About 50,000 people on both sides make their homes in these enclaves. Now, however, residents have reason for optimism. Earlier in June, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi signed a historic agreement that will see the two countries swap the remaining enclaves and allow their residents to choose where to live. These images show what life is like today on the Bangladesh side.
