Pakistan has an estimated 1.8 million brick makers, most of them Catholics, who are forced to work on a bonded basis that condemns them to slavery

Under the paishgi system, the brick makers or bhatta mazdoor are given an advance by the owner of the kiln which they must repay. It is a debt that often carries on for generations. And because most workers are illiterate, the figures are routinely massaged by the employers
