A smashed statue of Mary at Mt Carmel Convent stands testament to the ferocity of anti-Christian violence by extremist Hindus that began in August 2008 in the Kandhamal district of Orissa state.

The attacks went on for five months, claiming 95 lives and 6,500 homes, businesses and churches.

Largely forgotten by the international aid community, local Christians are still scrabbling for funds to rebuild their homes and lives, while always living in the fear of a new flashpoint
