Celebrating Eid in conflict-torn Mindanao

Thousands of Filipino Muslims in the southern Philippines celebrated Eid al-Fitr this year in evacuation centers in Mindanao following a terrorist attack on Marawi, the country's only Islamic city.

Armed clashes between government security forces and gunmen claiming to have links with the so-called Islamic State resulted in the devastation of the city and the displacement of its residents.

The conflict did not deter displaced Muslims from celebrating the important religious holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

The Eid celebration in Iligan, a predominantly Catholic city, was highlighted by the distribution of flowers and relief goods by Christian residents.

"More than ever, our Muslim brothers and sisters must feel that they are not alone in this trial," said a Catholic nun who led the distribution of roses to the displaced people.
