A shelter in Kathmandu
The lifelong mission of the late Father Thomas Gafney SJ was to provide care for disadvantaged people in Nepal. His mission is fulfilled on a daily basis at Kathmandu's three Jesuit Social Service Centers, which he helped pioneer. One of them bears his name - Gafney Bhawan - to honor Nepal's “father of social work."

Gafney, an American who took Nepalese citizenship, was murdered in 1997. The case has never been solved. Several of the 20 male residents of Gafney Bhawan have been here since before that tragic event.
