| General Characteristics of the Diocese
The history of Catholic mission in Maumere began when Dominican Fathers Joao Bautista da Fortalezza and Simao da Madre de Deus arrived in Paga and Sikka, respectively, in 1566. Both missioners then served and spread Catholicism in the coastal area of Flores Island. As a result, in 1613, Maumere had already 200 Catholic families.
In 1862, Father J Fransen from Larantuka visited Catholics in Maumere and asked them to build a new mission station. Jesuit Father Metz came in 1863 and worked together with Father Fransen to develop Catholic mission. Two other Jesuits, Fathers Dijkman and Omzigt, followed Father Metz in 1864 and worked in Maumere. At that time, the number of Catholics was 6,310 people.
In 1873, Father Omzigt led the mission station of Maumere and established St. Joseph Church (which now becomes the Cathedral church). Afterwards, several Jesuit priests and brothers as well as Charity sisters came. They built new mission stations, schools, and student dormitories.
The apostolic prefecture of Sunda Kecil (small Sunda) was established by the Apostolic Decree in Nov. 1913, which also included Flores Island. Divine Word Bishop Petrus Noyen was appointed Apostolic Prefect. Consequently, Divine Word priests replaced Jesuit priests working in Flores, while Charity sisters were replaced by Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS).
In 1914, Catholics were 17, 402 people.
On Dec. 12, 2005, the Vatican officially announced the establishment of Maumere diocese. Based in Maumere town, it covers Sikka district. Before becoming a diocese, Maumere had been one of Ende archdiocese's three vicariates. The other two are Ende, which covers Ende district, and Bajawa, which covers Ngada district.
On April 23, 2006, the first bishop - Mgr Vincentius Sensi Potokota - was ordained.
Maumere diocese covers an area of 1,731,932 kilometers square. It borders with Larantuka diocese in the east and Ende archdiocese in the west.
