A. Ordinary of Nellore Diocese

 
Bishop Moses Doraboina Prakasam was born on Oct. 2, 1957, in Mariapuram, Kadapa District. He was ordained a priest on April. 7, 1983, and was appointed Bishop of Nellore on July 26, 2002. His episcopal ordination was on Aug. 28, 2002. Bishop Moses Doraboina Prakasam is Chairman of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Class Commission of the Andhra Pradesh Bishops Council. Furthermore he is Chairman of Amruthavani, Regional Communication Centre.

      As of June 2005, Nellore diocese had 68,765 baptized Catholics, representing 1.05 percent of all 6,531,312 people in the territory. The diocese had 72 parishes and 350 mission stations. On average, the diocese records 500 baptisms per year. There are 300 catechumens annually on average.

  • General Characteristics of the Diocese

    In a land area of 30,800 square kilometers, the diocesan territory covers the civil districts of Nellore and Prakasam.

    Population
    In Nellore diocese, the population is 6,531,312 as of June 2005. (The population of the whole country is about 1,2 billion.)

    Political structure
    The main political parties are the Congress Party, Telugu Desam (regional party) and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

    Economy
    The per capita income in the diocesan territory is: Rs 11,381 or US$285 (as of February. 2008).

    There are no major industries in the diocesan area except handloom sector which is a small scale industry.

    The main crops are paddy, sugarcane, cotton and tobacco.

    Nellore district is also known for aqua (prawn and fish) culture. The district, in fact, is called the "shrimp capital of India."

    Telecommunications
    Telecommunication services (dish connections) are fairly widespread in the diocesan territory. No TV broadcasting station.

    Transportation
    The infrastructure facilities for transport are good. Buses of the State Road Transport Corporation and rail are the modes of transport.

    Education
    The literacy rate in the diocesan territory is 61.2 %

    Cultural dimension
    Cinema is popular among the people. Local varieties of dance and drama are also popular.
