Bishop Govindu Joji was born on May 3, 1944, in Dharmaram in Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh state. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 26, 1969, and appointed Bishop of Nalgonda on May 23, 1997. His episcopal ordination was on June 24, 1997.

      As of Dec. 31, 2005, Nalgonda diocese had 68,230 baptized Catholics, accounting for 1.12 percent of all 6,065,650 people in the territory. The archdiocese had 62 parishes and 255 mission stations. In 2005, the archdiocese recorded 250 baptisms and 3,000 catechumens.

  • Children are getting their mid-day meal at Medacheruvu parish of Nalgonda diocese. The food is supplied by the American organization, Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
    Loans being provided to women by the Nalgonda diocesan social service society director Father A. Joseph at Bhongir parish. The Bridge Foundation, engaged in welfare activities, sponsors them.

    General Characteristics of the Diocese

    Geography
    The diocesan territory stretches over a land area of 32,661 square kilometers and comprises the civil districts of Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar.

    Population
    The population in the diocese was 2,852,092 as of 2005. The population of the whole country is 1 billion. The main group of tribals in the districts are the Lambadas. Telugu and Urdu are the main languages.

    Political structure
    The major parties in the districts are the Indian National Congress, Telugu Desam and the Communists.

    Economy
    The per capita income is 9,148 rupees (US$208 as of February 2007). There are no major industries in the district. The principal crops are paddy, groundnut, red gram, green gram, castor, cotton and chilly.

    Telecommunications
    Telecommunication services are fairly widespread. No TV or radio stations.

    Transportation
    The infrastructural facilities are good. The modes of transport are railways, public buses and other road vehicles.

    Education
    The literacy rate here is 50.78 percent.

    Cultural dimension
    Local art forms of dance, drama and singing are popular.
