A. Ordinary of Cuddapah Diocese

 
Bishop Prasad Gallela was born on April 7, 1962 at Adoni, Kurnool district. He was ordained a priest on March 1, 1989, and was appointed Bishop of Cuddapah on 31 January 31, 2008. His episcopal ordination was on March 1, 2008. Prior to his appointment Bishop Gallela has been professor and spiritual director in St John's Regional Major seminary, Konddadaba, Visakhapatnam.

  • General Characteristics of the Diocese

    In a land area of 31,019 square kilometers, the diocesan territory covers the civil districts of Kadapa and Chittoor.

    Population
    In the diocese of Cuddapah, the population is 63, 73,286 at end of 2006. (The population of the whole country is over 1 billion).

    Political structure
    The two main political parties in the region are the Indian National Congress and the Telugu Desam Party. Kadapa is the home district of the State Chief Minister, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who belongs to the Congress party.

    Economy
    The per capita income in the diocesan territory is Rs. 10,708 (as of July 2008 US$251). Kadapa district is a repository of mineral wealth like lead, barites, asbestos and limestone. It is also known for "Cuddapah stone" used in construction and slabs. Cement production is a major industry in the district. Chittoor is known for its agro-based industries such as fruit-processing units and byproducts of horticulture. Chittoor has vast potentialities for development of floriculture and plantation crops like coffee and areca nuts. The major agricultural products of the area are: groundnut, paddy, sugarcane, cotton, turmeric and jowar.

    Telecommunications
    Telecommunications services are fairly widespread. There is a radio station in Kadapa.

    Transportation
    Transportation infrastructure facilities are good. The modes of transport are mainly public buses and trains

    The literacy rate in the diocesan territory is: 64.8 percent

    Language
    The languages used are Telugu, Tamil and English.

    Cultural dimension
    Burra Katha, a local folklore is popular. So also local forms of dance and drama.
