Diocese winds up celebrations

Nearly 50,000 people, including Vatican officials and 28 prelates, attended the end of celebrations of the 125th anniversary of Mangalore diocese yesterday.
The diocese has produced 42 prelates and more than 4,000 priests and nuns
“This is the celebration of the success journey of the faith of the people amidst tough captivity of Tipu Sultan, a Muslim ruler,” said Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-Fai, secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples from the Vatican.
The crowd included 450 priests and hundreds of religious.
Mangalore became an independent diocese on September 1, 1886, when Pope Leo XIII established the Indian hierarchy.
To mark the occasion two hostels are being planned for rural youths, said Bishop Aloysius D’Souza of Mangalore.
