Jesuit Bishop Julianus Sunarka of Purwokerto has told pastoral workers in Central Java that their role in tackling the social injustices gripping modern society cannot be underestimated.

“In order to proclaim the Kingdom of God, you should help our Buddhist, Catholic, Hindu, Muslim and Protestant brothers and sisters who are facing injustice,” he told around 90 pastoral workers at a December 9-11 formation program at the Hening Griya Pastoral House in Baturaden, in Banyumas district.

He expressed hope they would “start to think about becoming more active in supporting those facing social injustice.”

The three-day event was organized by Caritas Purwokerto, known as Karito.

According to Karito director, Father Stephanus Budhi Prayitno, more people are becoming victims of human trafficking and many housewives endure domestic violence.

“The bishop’s call to offer help to them when needed is something that must be taken seriously,” he said.

For Aries Suyanto, 33, participating in the program reminded him of his basic goals.

“God loved us first. So we need to make this love real by loving others,” he said.

According to Elisabeth Herni Widiastutid, secretary of Purwokerto diocese’s Catholic Women of the Republic of Indonesia, becoming more active in helping others is a test of faith.

“Our presence among people is needed to materialize our faith,” she said.
