Volunteer collectors aid the needy

A group of Catholic volunteers who gather used items to help support people living with HIV attended a special Mass in honor of their patron Saint Vincent de Paul, where they emphasized the importance of their work and their dedication to continuing their efforts on behalf of those in need.
The volunteers, along with about 800 parishioners attended the Mass, celebrated by Father John Baptist Vu Van Kien, at An Hai church in Hai Phong city late last month.
“We are very happy to help thousands of underprivileged people, especially people with HIV/AIDS, thanks to our efforts in collecting used materials, Fr Kien, who established the volunteer group in 2006, said.
He said the group has earned 1.2 billion dong (US$60,000) since the program started, with funds used to cover medical treatments, food and elderly care.
Peter Nguyen Quang Huy, who heads the volunteer group, said active members range between the ages of 16 and 60 and include business people, government officials, students, people with HIV/AIDS as well as several non-Catholics.
Truong Thi Anh, 22, a non-Catholic volunteer, said she has been inspired by the efforts of other members, which has given her an opportunity to serve her community.
Fr Kien said volunteers also pay weekly visits and offer gifts to patients at their homes or in hospitals, provide comfort to the dying and make funeral arrangements when necessary.
