A dance considered one of the oldest forms of theatre in the world will for the first time re-enact the message and essence of the Holy Eucharist, said a PTI report in the Deccan Herald.

Steeped in tradition, color and grace, and known for its portrayal of Hindu tales, Kerala’s classical dance-drama, Kathakali, set to make its ‘Christian debut’ in a Catholic parish in the southern city of Kochi, the report states.

Kathakali is traditionally based on themes derived from Hindu epics Ramayana, Mahabaratha and other myths and legends of Hinduism.

A new 90-minute performance titled ‘Divyakarunyacharitam’ (Story of Holy Eucharist), is being planned for July 21, based on the poem ‘Ithu Ninakkai’ (This is given up for you) written by Indian Christian lyricist Father Joy Chencheril.

Fr Chencheril said that the recital, based on the ‘Last Supper of Christ’, will portray the message of the “eucharastic love shown by Christ”.

The Christian version will adhere to the original form with regard to costumes and presentation but Malayalam would replace Sanskrit shlokas and Christ would don the costume of a Rishi (sage), said the priest.

“Through this presentation, we hope Kathakali too will find a place in Church premises, now dominated by cinematic dances and mimics during festivals,” said Fr Chencheril.

“Holy Eucharist epitomises the sharing of love. Kathakali, because of its poise and rhythm, can well express this spirit of sharing the self-emptying love,” he was quoted saying by the Express News Service.
