Catholic priest Robert Reyes today called on the bishop of Butuan diocese to take a leave of absence out of ‘propriety’.

The bishop, Juan de Dios Pueblos, had admitted asking for a sports utility vehicle as a “birthday gift” from former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“He should set an example as to how a bishop should behave in the context of a scandal,” said Father Reyes.

Officials of the Charity Sweepstakes Office earlier revealed that some prelates asked for vehicles and financial aid from the Arroyo government.

Father Reyes said the bishops should return the vehicles and the money they got to the government.

“Restitution is important. We repair the damage, if there’s some damage done, and it will be good for the image of the Church. We all commit mistakes anyway,” the priest said.

The bishops, however, said the “donations” were used for social action and apostolic activities. Bishop Pueblos said he asked for “personal funds from the president,” not from any government agency.

This one thing is very clear: the bishops use the donated cars to serve the poor and needy in their dioceses.Actually they are giving services to the people and therefore partly
doing services for the public good. They deserve thanks from the government.

Kudos to Fr. Reyes for his strong stand against misfits in the church.  If l may add to his call for Pueblos (I cannot address him as Bishop for what he had done to his office (Bishop) to take a leave of absence, is for Pueblos to leave the priesthood instead.  He has already abandoned his role to represent Jesus Christ here on earth is his capacity as a priest.  He can serve the Lord in some other ways but not the priesthood. There are lots of catholics gone to other faiths because of scandals after scandals in the priesthood.

Fr. Robert Reyes said it well. Not that the Reverend Bishop is guilty, but to set an example of humility amidst scandals
