Church to protest against ruling

The Catholic Church in the central island of Palawan is planning to stage a protest against the ruling of the Department of Justice (DOJ) clearing former governor Joel Reyes in the killing of anti-mining broadcaster Gerry Ortega last January.
“The whole of Palawan will shout against it. We are definitely going to hold a protest some time soon,” Bishop Pedro Arigo of Puerto Princesa said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.
“That’s really a big blow to the family (of Ortega). What kind of justice system do we have? That decision is really a big miscarriage of justice,” he said.
Arigo believes the broadcaster’s murder was related to his stand against mining projects in the province. He said Ortega’s murder was a great loss to the people of Palawan.
