Daejeon diocese is continuing to show how to love thy neighbor with a charity campaign that has been running for four years. Father Francis Xavier Park Jin-yong, the diocese’s social pastoral director, recently presided at a Mass attended by around 100 parishioners and four diocesan priests to mark the fourth anniversary of the “Sharing 100 Won” campaign. The campaign, in which Catholics are urged to donate a 100 won coin (US$0.1) after every meal, was launched to celebrate Daejeon diocese’s 60th anniversary in 2008. It’s his diocese’s unique way of loving God, Father Park said during his homily. He said the aim of “this beautiful sharing campaign,” is to share love with neighbors at home and abroad who are suffering from hunger. Vincentius Shin Kyung-ho, coordinator of the campaign, said they have so far provided 196,310,000 won (US$180,000) for medicine and food in Mongolia, Ecuador, North Korea and to several schools in the diocese. Daejeon diocese was established as an apostolic prefecture in 1948. At the end of 2009, the diocese had 262,561 Catholics in 128 parishes and 75 mission stations. Meanwhile, Catholics and Buddhists in Gangwon-do province have held a joint jumble sale to help poor people. Kukog parish and the Sungbulwon temple held the event on Saturday in in Wonju. Around 3,000 people turned up to buy donated groceries, household goods, and food. “It is the first time our church and the temple have held a joint event. It was a very meaningful occasion,” said Father Barnabas Kim Young-gin, the parish priest. “We will try and organize further events like this in the future,” he added.
