The Vatican has reaffirmed that the so-called divine miracles argued by an alleged Marian visionary are not “true Christian teaching,” Kwangju archdiocese noted yesterday.

Archbishop Hyginus Kim Hee-jung of Kwangju said in his statement that the Pontifical Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had sent its letter to the archdiocese on March 30.

The Vatican congregation noted in the letter that the so-called “divine miracles revolving around Julia Youn in Naju, South Korea” that she and her followers had sent to the congregation are “far away from true Christian faith,” said Archbishop Kim.

It also pointed out that some of her followers have confused Catholics by saying “the Vatican will support their argument and approve it soon.” But “the Vatican will never change its position on the alleged visionary,” the archbishop noted.

Archbishop Kim claimed that the Vatican letter has reconfirmed that “the Vatican has taken the same stand with Kwangju archdiocese” on the alleged Marian visionary.

He explained that he issued the statement because “some of Catholics still follow Youn” though the archdiocese issued directives in 1998, 2003 and 2005 banning Catholics from participating in ceremonies organized by her.

Meanwhile, Youn and her supporters have maintained that since 1985 there were several “miracles” around her and her Marian statue, but the archdiocese issued the three directives to deny it.

Finally, Archbishop Andreas Choi Chang-mou of Kwangju had declared in January 2008 that Youn and her followers had incurred latae sententiae excommunication.

And at their biannual plenary assembly in 2008, Korean bishops agreed they would respect that decision.

But Youn’s followers have insisted the Vatican has different thought on Youn, referring to Cardinal Ivan Dias, prefect of Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, who, they said, urged the Korean bishops to recognize Youn during their Ad limina visit to the Vatican in 2007.

However, the archdiocese then reminded Catholics that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is the only competent authority to rule on the issue, criticizing they are “distorting” the “private” concern of Cardinal Dias who had urged better pastoral efforts in this regard.

Medjagore has not been affirmed as safe . I have a feeling that it is about to be condemned also. What a disappointment to the many that believe . That is the danger of following McDonald size apparitions, when they are proven to be false, the faithful are disheartened. I say the Vatican should now move on Medjagore as well, now!

    Great news. Thanks for sharing.
Another example that is always the local Bishop who has the authority and who is the voice of the Church to define the validity or not of alleged apparitions or another reported phenomena.

In this case the bishop had in 2008 made his declaration on the topic, and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith confirmed the decision when they were contacted directly by the “visionary”, trying to go around the Bishop.

In Europe there is a large apparitions deception already running for many years which started in a place called Medjugorje, which has always been denounced by the local Bishops of the Church, though the “visionaries” are still, like in Naju, South Korea, promoting the deception and claiming to be waiting for some kind of Vatical blessing eventually..

  • Mmmac7

Time will tell the truth. There will always be Joan of Arcs and there will not always be freemasons in the Church.

  • Sabine

Actually, he Vatican has taken the judgment of the apparitions in Medjugorje away from the local bishop, setting up an international commission under the guidance of the CDF in Rome to examine this phenomenon.
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger intervened in 1986 and took the jurisdiction of Medjugorje away from the local bishop of Mostar, Bishop Zanic, placing it into the hands of the Yugoslav Bishops Conference. This was done so Medjugorje could be judged objectively. That’s why Medjugorje has recently been placed under an international commission headed by the Holy See, so the apparitions could be judged objectively.
The local Church authorities not certain of the authenticity of the apparitions at Medjugorje have themselves at times not been in conformity with the Church’s process of objective evaluation which therefore calls for ongoing cooperation. Much of the debate surrounding Medjugorje generally results from misunderstandings of official Church position pertaining to Medjugorje. Which in light of the 1991 Zadar statement from the ex Yugoslav conference of bishops, and the May 26, 1998 letter of Arcbishop Tarcisio Bertone then secretary of the CDF, does allow for private pilgrims to go to Medjugorje in good faith and in full obedience to the Magisterium.

Sorry folks, you are both wrong. Pope John Paul II was very open to belief in Medjugorje. Pope Benedict took it from the hands of the one and only Archbishop in thar area that disapproved it. Benedict’s purpose was to reevaluate the apparitions, as he did not agree with the Archbishop. I have been to Medjugorje and anyone who has been there knows that it is not false. Also, Archbishop Schonborn was there last year and let the world know how approving he is of those apparitions.

Sad that they won’t follow churchs teachings

  • Marcellox

Hopefully Medjugorje will be roundly condemned next. The years of disobedience by both Catholic Clergy and laypersons against the Bishops is the greatest sign that this event is not of Divine origin, no matter how may “good fruits” it produces. Bayside, Necedah, San Damiano, El Escorial, (and even Naju) have all produced wonderful fruits even though they were not from God…Satan will put up with “good fruits” for a time if he believes he will triumph in the end (which of course he won’t!)

I wonder why Medjugorje is in this discussion. Isn’t the story about Naju, Korea?
BTW Sabine, gave a wonderful description of the status of Medjugorje!

After 30 years and presently still permitting millions from all over the world to experience everything connected to it, AND with the backing of the now Blessed JPII …. I doubt it!!

Mother Angelica today on EWTN in a rerun, now called “Classic:”

    “Mary is appearing in Medjugorje.”

I think I would trust Mother Angelica before I trusted Marcellox (and she could also tell us a thing or two about misbehaving bishops). Of course, I turst the CDF and the Pope before anyone else but the jury is still out on the place, even after 30 years (which should tell you something too).

The Vatican Commission studying Medjugorje will decide with one of three decisions:
    1) constat de supernaturalitate (worthy of belief) – extremely unlikely while the apparitions continue;
    2) constat de non supernaturalitate (condemned) – also unlikely in my opinion;
    3) non constat de supernaturalitate – (cannot be determined) – almost certainly the decision that we can expect if the apparitions are ongoing. However, critics will likely confuse #2 and #3, saying that it has not been approved.

Marcellox, you are poorly informed. It is the Vatican that has roundly condemed the actions of the Bishops of Mostar and have silenced them. The first Bishop at first approved then condemed Medjugorje because he claimed Our Lady critisized him over an issue concerning 2 Franciscan priest who had nothing to do with Medjugorje. In the end after an extensive investigation from the Vatican, it found that the Bishop’s accusations against the 2 Franciscans to be a fabracation on the Bishops part and later that Bishop and the current one were order to be silent on matters concerning Medjugorje. Both Bishops have been disobident to the orders of the Vatican. Only recently did the current Bishop become silent. The curent Bishop as reported everywhere in the press, even believes Fatima, Lourdes and all marian appartions are a fraud. If you get John Paul the Great fully supporting Medjugorje personnally, he a mystic, then that says alot. More good fruits have come out of Medjugorje than any other appartional site except Guadalupe in Church history.

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. The Vatican has set up a commission to further investigate this holy place of peae. Evidently, you didn’t go to Medjugorje and possibly you don’t believe in miracles. I don’t know anything about the other places you mentioned, but please don’t mix Medjugorje with them. Catholic clergy and we laypersons have not been disobedient and I guess you don’t care for Blessed John Paul II because he loved Medjugorje. God bless. No need to reply, just wanted you to know that you should read and probably pray a bit more.

  • Bpeterson

Have you been to Medjugorje? Do you have any personal knowledge whatsoever regarding its authenticity, especially in the beginning years when the kids were chased by the communist police through the tobacco fields and no one believed them? Have you heard the profound and deeply moving testimony of Fr. Jozo, the local priest who spent a few years in prison when, although he first doubted, he heard God’s voice “Protect the children” and did so? I suggest those of you who think the Bosnian apparitions are fake travel there and ask the Holy Spirit to show you the truth. As far as I’m concerned, this hardened attorney [and many other Catholics like me worldwide] needed a kick in the pants to get real about their so-called faith. I went to Medjugorje by sheer happenstance back in 1987 and again in 1998 and found the very same thing: a call to holiness and genuine love of God. As any good judge would rule, the evidence is clear and convincing.

I have been to Medjugorie and it is like heaven on earth!I had the most incredible mystical experience there, not to mention, seeing the Blessed Mother standing at the Foot of the Cross! I would place my life on the fact that the Mother of God IS appearing in Medjugorie…..and no one would convince me otherwise….It has changed my life!

If Medjugorje is approved, the Church’s teaching of obedience will go done the drain, and so will celibacy, which is the ultimate sacrifice to Jesus.

  • Domigary

who is telling you medjugorje is not affirmed as safe? Dont mix your personal opinion with the facts .Every one knows that that the jurisdiction has been removed from the local bishop and it has been placed on the CDF. I have a feeling that medjugorje is about to get approved by the cdf.

I am a Korean-American, have lived in the U.S. for over 30 years, and discovered about Naju in 1994 by a chance during a visit to Seoul. I have never met the seer nor wanted to see her, but my faith has changed after I read the Blessed Mother’s messages. In a way this was my turning point in my Christian life. Personally, I have experienced many miracles after that and by my own experiences, confirmed that Jesus is LIVING GOD, not far away somewhere in the universe. I am not easily convinced person. I go through tests to confirm (my own) until there is no possible human explaination on my experiences.
Those miracles(in Naju or related to it) are true although I am not one of the followers who love the seer so much.
I can’t love that much any humanbeings because I feel I never reached enough love for the Lord. Whatever the reasons, the Bishops in Korea are against Naju. I can only guess after all the signs I examed for my own good is that they are afraid losing power which they have enjoyed for so long and maybe some other worldly reasons behind.
It’s sad that with that much power given by God being used for own worldy gains. Without the Vestments, some of them are not easily recognizible in this present day.
They must stand on God’s side always and work for their flocks, not the way around.

So much devided over HUMAN decisions! Of course no harm to have it consideration for they have more knowledge. My feelings are if you have closer relationship to Jesus more than before you visit or decided to follow certain seer’s messages, don’t go over losing your peace. Once I had to go to the Bayside myself after an amazing signs from Our Lady and I had not heard about Bayside before. I am not a followers of Bayside. I am not against it either. Because of the Bayside Ad in the Washington Post Sunday paper on that day, canceled my plan which was to leave Church(give up faith). So, my plea here, if you call, not to lose your peace. We are already in spiritual war with the world. If you have witnessed the Eucharist miracles and other miracles regarding Naju, you won’t be fighting.
Maybe we don’t have time to fingerpoint who is right or wrong. Why not try to imitate Jesus’ love?

How sad it is to see a bias reporting such as this is being used to easily deceive the readers of Spirit Daily. For this report to state that the ruling comes directly from the Vatican is nothing but hogwash. Let the readers discern the TRUTH about the events in Naju, and for the world to see how the evil forces are manipulating the modernist priests in the Archdiocese of Kwangju. May I request that we please offer prayers for these sacerdotals for they are under the firm grip of Satan; we are fighting a great spiritual battle here.

Take a look at this video of Vicka, (link below) Medjugorje “visionary” reacting to outside stimuli when she’s SUPPOSED to be in “ecstasy” and unable to see, hear, or feel ANYTHING except “Our Lady”…Then listen to her excuse: that she thought “the baby Jesus” was going to fall out of “Our Lady’s” arms! Like that could EVER happen? Have you ever seen this video before? Of course not! No website that supports Medjugorje would ever dare show it! And this is just one of the things they’re keeping from you (and Mother Angelica) about this false apparition! Vicka’s a liar and a fake, just like the rest of the “seers”, and if you want to continue to be fooled by Medjugorje that is certainly your prerogative. What a shame that Satan is able to fool millions of people, including clergy of all ranks with this charade whose sole purpose is to choke out the TRUE apparitions of Our Lady. Sister Magdalena of the Cross fooled countless lay persons and clergy with her visions, miracles, healings, stigmata, etc… until ON HER DEATHBED she confessed she had sold her soul to the Devil so that she could be able to do these things and make people think she was this marvelous saint. The Church had to perform an EXORCISM on her before she died! Look it up! Even Father Benedict Groeschel talked about it in one of his books! Watch this video, and WAKE UP, PEOPLE!!

Oh, and by the way, to those of you who keep saying I am “poorly informed.” I have nearly every single book on Medjugorje that has ever been published in English since 1985, because I have been following everything related to this “apparition” since that time, that includes the VERY FIRST books on Medjugorje, which is crucial because THOSE are the ones that have recorded all the mistakes the “visionaries” made at the beginning of these events THAT THEY CAN’T TAKE BACK…but they have been able to “perfect” their stories since then, after 30 years of practice-makes-perfect (well, except for that video I gave you the link to, that you probably won’t believe anyway because you’re so caught up in the drama and the spectacles of spinning suns and rosaries turning to gold, and all the other cheap tricks Satan throws in over there to fool everybody.) Oh, and just because Pope John Paul II believed in Medjugorje that makes it genuine? A Pope who KISSED THE KORAN, allowed priests and priestesses of SANTERIA to perform dances in front of him, who let himself be “BLESSED” by a topless, pagan African priestess, (there are PHOTOGRAPHS of all this, you know) etc… when all the early Christian martyrs of the Church were torn apart by lions and suffered other tortures before they died because they REFUSED to give or receive any kind of honor to the false gods and teachings of the Roman emperors? Oh yeah, you can really trust HIS judgment on Medjugorje alright!

  • napiliko

I can sense from your comment that you are not truly aware of what had happened in Naju, South Korea, otherwise you would not state “promoting the deception……..” in your comment. Just for your information, many priests and bishops, including Blessed Pope John Paul II have witnessed the Eucharistic miracles that occurred to Julia Kim; many many people have also come forward to testify on the miraculous healing they received. The miracles/apparitions are, as far as I’m concerned, the grandest of all the miracles that had taken place in the history of the Catholic Church. That’s why it is very important that we do not draw rash judgment on Naju at this stage; only time will tell. I can only pray that you study and learn about it before saying anything. Peace and God Bless.

How can Eucharistic Miracles be deceiving? Then the very sanctity of the mass is in question. Have been there myself and the presence of the Lord is truely felt there

Dear Blessed Mother..in NAJU-KOREA…We beg for your intercession to your Son Our Lord Jesus Christ to touch spiritually these spiritual leaders and some laity trying to destroy and make divisions on us your followers and servants by denying all these miraculous manifestations that lots of your believers has seen and yet those in the higher position in the church are the ones persecuting and deceiving your good deeds…Is it hard to understand and believe the wonders & miracles the Good Lord that we are praising…It is not Julia Kim that we are worshiping but it’s Mother Mary and her son Our Lord Jesus. She is just but an instrument to show for those sinners everywhere and sinners in the universal church… how great is the LORD and a very awesome LORD.
