Leaders of 15 Islamic organizations have called on Indonesian Muslims to return to true Islamic teachings and avoid being influenced by the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII) movement. "What the NII has taught, such as lying and criminal acts, hurts Muslim society," they said in a joint statement read at an April 29 press conference at the Jakarta office of Muhammadiyah, the country’s second largest Islamic organization. They said the movement runs counter to the teachings of Islam which emphasize honesty, responsible attitudes. The Muslim leaders also urged the government to deal with the movement seriously according to the existing law. NII continues to recruit young people to be its members, indoctrinating them with radical ideology. It also threatens to kill those who will inform authority of their actions.
