Muslim calls for security in Holy Week
A Muslim who heads the East Flores district, in predominantly Catholic province of East Nusa Tenggara, has called on local people to help maintain security during Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Easter.
“Securing and making Catholics feel comfortable during Semana Santa and Easter observances are not only the responsibility of police but also all parties,” Muhammad S. Wongso said as Holy Week started.
Wongso wanted to make sure that this year’s Holy Week observances will be much better than before.
The Muslim leader also said security must be tightened as many pilgrims from different parts of the country come to Larantuka, the district’s capital, to witness the traditional large procession on Good Friday.
According to reports, Portuguese ambassador Carlos Manuel Leitao Frota will attend the Holy Week celebration in Larantuka.
