Churches demand more aid for North

The National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK) has sent an open letter to South Korean president Lee Myung-bak demanding the resumption of humanitarian aid to the North. “We hope discussions and exchanges between the North and South continue. We especially seek non-governmental relief work, including religious ones, to be resumed as soon as possible,” the NCCK told a press conference today. Ignoring the plight of North Koreans will harm future peace efforts on the Korean peninsula and hopes for reunification, the council said. It also warned that if Seoul does not permit food aid to the North, it will lend assistance anyway through international NGOs or by other means. KO13380.1642

Help UCA News to be independent
Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
