Oblates mark 75th year in Laos
LAOS: The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate have celebrated their 75th anniversary of arrival in Laos.
About 450 Catholics including two bishops, 25 nuns and 16 priests from Thailand, Vietnam, Italy and France gathered for the celebration on Dec. 8 in Vientiane.
The Oblates came to Laos in 1935 and concentrated their missionary work mostly in the tribal areas north of the country.
After the communist takeover in 1975, 89 oblates were expelled. Now, Bishop Jean Khamse Vithavong of Vientiane and a priest are the country’s two local Oblates.
