Priests act in traditional drama to raise funds

A traditional Javanese drama performed by four priests and several laypeople has raised 500 million rupiah (US$55,555) for a church damaged by an earthquake.
The Association of Catholics of Klepu (Gumathok) organized the event on Aug. 26 to renovate the rectory and hall of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Klepu, Yogyakarta.
The building was hit by an earthquake in 2006.
The drama, which is part of the Javanese Ketoprak genre, revolved around a well-known theatrical character called Petruk, often portrayed as having a long nose.
The traditional artform was chosen “to attract as many people as we can,” said Slamet Sriyantoro, who heads Gumathok. “In this way, many people would donate money for the parish renovation.”
It is rare to see such traditional dramas these days, said parish priest Father Fransiskus Xaverius Murdisusanto.
Besides raising funds for the parish, the play also aimed at “preserving Javanese heritage,” he said.
The total cost of renovations is expected to be 2.5 billion rupiah.
The parish has produced three bishops, 54 priests, 31 brothers and 144 nuns.
