Seoul archdiocese says it is sending US$30,000 to help provide emergency aid to victims of flooding in Pakistan.

The One Body One Spirit Movement, the Seoul archdiocesan overseas aid arm, said it will send the relief fund through Caritas Internationalis (CI).

“Besides the relief fund, we will collect more aid material from the faithful to help suffering Pakistanis,” Emilliana Ryu Jung-hee, the movement’s public relations officer, told ucanews.com on Aug. 20,

“Our organization is assessing flood damage through CI and other NGOs working in Pakistan to find out what they need,” she said.

According to CI, the flooding in northern Pakistan since late July has affected an estimated 14 million people and killed over 1,600.

Houses, bridges and roads have been washed away, and the agricultural sector decimated leaving people without food, shelter and drinking water.

“Pakistan suffered a huge earthquake in 2005 causing 87,000 casualties and this time it’s suffering from floods. I hope many faithful contribute to our relief efforts,” Ryu said.

One Body One Spirit has been helping Pakistani women become financially independent by supporting job training centers for them, ever since the earthquake, she added.
