Anti-gambling crusaders to name betting barons

A Filipino anti-gambling group says it will hand the government a list of alleged illegal “jueteng” Jueteng lottery operators.
The Krusadang Bayan Laban sa Jueteng (KBLJ, National Crusade against Jueteng) chair and retired Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz said his group will provide the list of “jueteng lords” to newly appointed Department of Interior Local and Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo.
Following his July 9 appointment by President Benigno Aquino III, Robredo, who has received several awards for ethical leadership, vowed that he would fight to stop jueteng.
“We will give him the list with all the names so he’ll know who these people are,” the archbishop told a weekly media forum in Intramuros, Manila.
The list now contains more than 30 names, he added, declining to name individuals.
“What I know is what my peers tell me. I really don’t have direct knowledge but if necessary we will release it,” the archbishop said.
Archbishop Cruz also said that he would provide Robredo with information on his group’s nationwide jueteng monitoring system.
“We have people in different dioceses all over the Philippines who help us with monitoring,” Archbishop Cruz said.
He said crusaders are willing to conduct seminars to educate people on the problems created by the illegal numbers’ game.
“We will support the new secretary in whatever way we can,” Archbishop Cruz said.
