Religious brother to review sex education
Incoming Philippine education secretary Armin Luistro says he will review the proposed integration of sex education into the public school curriculum once he assumes office July 1.
"We have different definitions of sex ed. I think the question that should be asked is not if you are in favor or not, rather what kind of education should be given,” said Luistro, a member of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
Church leaders have been opposing the integration of the UNFPA-developed Adolescent Reproductive Health Through Lifeskills-Based Education project into the school curriculum because they said it would promote promiscuity among youth.
Some Church leaders have already expressed their support for Brother Luistro’s appointment.
The Religious brother is expected to have "clear programs" including those related to the issue of sex education, said Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo of Manila, head of the Catholic bishops’ National Secretariat for Social Action.
Others are more doubtful.
“Is he ready to take a stand against the position of the Church, especially on sex education?” asked Antonio Tinio from the Alliance of Concerned Teachers party.
