Filipino bishops want freedom from corruption

In a series of Independence Day messages, Philippines bishops have appealed for freedom from corruption and division.
"True independence means liberation from sins," Archbishop Diosdado Talamayan of Tuguegarao said. "Therefore, the real essence of independence is liberation from graft and corruption."
Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales of Manila said that freedom cannot be imposed by law but must be found "within the individual."
“I hope the new leadership of the country will recognize their duty to the people… for the good of the nation; not of parties, not of religion, not of state.
“Let’s pray that we achieve complete freedom from division as we celebrate our independence,” Cardinal Rosales said.
However, Bishop Jose Oliveros of Malolos, chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference’s Episcopal Commission on Bioethics, lamented that moving the celebration of the feast from June 12 to June 14 had robbed the anniversary of its significance.
“We should celebrate Independence Day on the day itself, although we recognize the government’s desire to give the people a longer rest.”
“What we should also ask ourselves is ‘Are we really free?’,” Bishop Oliveros continued.
“Of course we are freer compared to the days of martial law. And this freedom must be used responsibly,” he concluded.
Philippines is celebrating its 112th Independence Day commemorating its declaration of independence from Spain.
