LONDON (UCAN) — The UK’s Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD) has warned about an email seeking personal details and purporting to be from the group’s director, Chris Bain.

“We are rigorously investigating the source of this spam email,” CAFOD director of the communities and supporter division, Tom O’Connor says in a statement.

“[We] would like to assure supporters that we do not condone any such behavior designed to exploit the excellent reputation that CAFOD enjoys worldwide for our hard work.”

The message has the subject line “CAFOD CHARITABLE ORGANISATION,” and says the recipient of the email has been appointed the legal agent to accept a fund worth US$200,000 to help alleviate poverty among widows and orphans.

It asks for name, full address and phone numbers.

“We would also like to make it clear that CAFOD has a strict policy never to send out unsolicited emails. Only those who have specifically requested email communications will be contacted in this way by us.”

CAFOD said the email has been created and emailed out fraudulently, and warns anyone receiving it to immediately delete it from their system, and report they have received it to their IT department or supplier.
